چکیده

In a previous paper (“Part 1”) it was shown that a combination of temperature-dependent viscosity and visco-plastic yielding is sufficient to give rudimentary plate tectonic-like behavior in three-dimensional models of mantle convection. Here, the calculations are extended to include two complexities which have been suggested as important in localizing deformation at plate boundaries: strain weakening and the presence of a low-viscosity asthenosphere. Introducing an asthenosphere by reducing the viscosity by a factor of 10 where material reaches a solidus (i) dramatically improves plate quality, even if the asthenosphere is restricted to regions around spreading centers, (ii) gives good, smoothly-evolving plate-like behavior over a wide range of yield stress values spanning an order of magnitude, and (iii) gives bimodal stable solutions over a range of yield stresseseither immobile-lid or plate behavior may be obtained depending on initial condition. By contrast, introducing an asthenosphere by using depth-dependent viscosity has a much smaller effect on system behavior. Increasing strain weakening (i) improves localization at spreading centers but leads to an increasingly complex network of spreading centers fragmenting the plates, (ii) weakens convergent zones and can make downwellings highly episodic, (iii) does not lead to pure transform boundaries in these calculations. Time-dependent ‘damage’ evolution and instantaneous strain-rate weakening give very similar results. All cases that display plate-like behavior have very long-wavelength mantle heterogeneity consistent with Earth’s.

Self-Consistent Generation of Tectonic Plates in Time- Dependent, Three-Dimensional Mantle Convection Simulations. Part 1: Pseudo-Plastic Yielding

Presented here are the first three-dimensional simulations of mantle convection to display self-consistently-generated plate tectonic-like behavior which is continuous in space and time. Plate behavior arises through a reasonable material description of silicate deformation, with a simple yield stress being sufficient to give first-order plate-like behavior. Toroidal:poloidal ratios are within ...

The Quest for Self-Consistent Generation of Plate Tectonics in Mantle Convection Models

Plate tectonics and mantle convection are different aspects of the same, coupled system, yet mantle convection calculations do not exhibit plate tectonic behavior unless it is imposed by the modeler. This paper explores the quest for self-consistent incorporation of plate tectonics into mantle convection models, and presents new results and parameterizations. Simulations of convection with buoy...

Mantle convection, the asthenosphere, and Earth’s thermal history

Calculations of mantle convection generally use constant rates of internal heating and time-invariant core-mantle boundary temperature. In contrast, parameterized convection calculations, sometimes called thermal history calculations, allow these properties to vary with time but only provide a single average temperature for the entire mantle. Here I consider three-dimensional spherical convecti...

The generation of plate tectonics from mantle convection

In the last decade, significant progress has been made toward understanding how plate tectonics is generated from mantle dynamics. A primary goal of plate-generation studies has been the development of models that allow the top cold thermal boundary layer of mantle convection, i.e. the lithosphere, to develop broad and strong plate-like segments separated by narrow, weak and rapidly deforming b...

Subduction styles in the Precambrian: Insight from numerical experiments

a r t i c l e i n f o Plate tectonics is a self-organizing global system driven by the negative buoyancy of the thermal boundary layer resulting in subduction. Although the signature of plate tectonics is recognized with some confidence in the Phanerozoic geological record of the continents, evidence for plate tectonics becomes less certain further back in time. To improve our understanding of ...
